One of the favorite tourist destinations in the world, San Francisco offers a wealth of opportunities for exploring the outdoors, walking tours, nightlife, and the arts. Spend a day exploring Golden Gate Park, where you’ll find trails, flower gardens, open fields, and many attractions including the Japanese Tea Gardens and Stybring Arboretum. Visit Stowe Lake and rent a row boat, or walk the length of the park to Ocean Beach.

Take a ferry trip from the city to Angel Island (it’s only accessible by boat) and rent a bike or take a hike along one of the many trails. The island’s fascinating ruins and wild beauty are enjoyed year round by locals and visitors alike.

Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. You get to Alcatraz by ferry.
The drive alone is worth the trip to Monterey and Carmel, south of SFBI about 2 hours along coastal Route 1 with its stunning cliffside views of the Pacific Ocean. Plan to make plenty of stops along the way to appreciate the unspoiled grandeur of the coastline.
Wine country in Napa and Sonoma counties, about 1 hour north of SFBI, offers a bounty of activities including some of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. There are hot air balloon rides, relaxing mineral and mud baths in Calistoga, nice shopping neighborhoods, and of course—the wineries. Plan to spend a leisurely day (or two!) exploring the area, and tasting the wines at several of the many excellent vineyards.
